When most foreign Christian workers were expelled from the country in the 1960s, many expected that the Burmese church would not survive. It did more than that—it thrived, and a strong national leadership emerged. Despite strong pressures, the church stepped up their outreach activities, and many more people heard the good news of Jesus.
Over the last few years the country has tentatively opened its doors to the outside world again. Visas are now easier to obtain.
Businesses, aid organizations and private schools are looking for foreign experts. Christian foreign workers can take up these openings and be active in their areas of expertise. With their dedicated lives and friendship to the people, they can be salt and light to the society.
With Myanmar churches being so active in outreach, there is less need for pioneer evangelists from abroad and for people to start their own new church or organization. There is need, however, for people who are willing to work in genuine partnership with the Myanmar Christians and to bond together with them in the body of Jesus. Such a partnership fosters mutual blessings in all areas of Christian life.
