Armed conflict always results in the displacement of people. Since independence from Britain, various armed groups from ethnic minorities have rebelled against the military government. Many rebels and civilians have fled to Thailand, which hosts over 1 million illegal immigrants from Myanmar, including about 300,000 Karen, Karenni (Kayah) and Mon. Others have found refuge in India and Bangladesh.
Many more people have been forced to leave their homes and settle in new places within Myanmar's borders. About 1 million internally displaced people (IDPs) survive in harsh or desperate conditions, including 280,000 Karen and Karenni IDPs in eastern Myanmar. In Shan State, there are about 300,000 IDPs from Shan, Lahu, Akha and Wa backgrounds.
Muslim Rohingyas who fled oppression in western Myanmar are slowly being returned from Bangladesh, but still face hardships. They are denied citizenship and health care and suffer forced labor. Infant mortality in this ethnic minority is four times higher than the national average.
National churches have begun orphanages for children fleeing the fighting. Other Christians, despite their privations, are actively assisting the needy alongside international organizations.
