THE FABRIC OF SOCIETY

Local communities provide much stability in Myanmar society. After many years of civil strife and in the face of severe problems, they are still offering a sense of safety and sanity.

Pray for the millions of families who have insufficient food and few necessities due to low income and low agricultural production. Over two-thirds of the rural population can’t produce or buy enough food. While the potential for production is good, farmers can’t make a decent living due to economic and political factors, including growing landlessness, deforestation, water shortages and lack of supporting services.

Pray that farmers in the northern mountains can make a good transition from opium cultivation to more legal forms of production. Although formerly promoted by local leaders, opium is now being eradicated. Pray for the many people who have become addicted to all kinds of drugs, alcohol or gambling.

Prayer Points

• Pray for the many girls who are innocently driven into commercial sex work by poverty, resulting in the loss of dignity and exposure to diseases.
• Pray for the migrant workers who, through poverty, have been forced to leave the social protection of their community and have become susceptible to these vices.
• Pray for the older generations that are suffering under the knowledge that, unlike their own experience when they were young, their children and grandchildren are not getting a decent education or proper health care.
