THE NATION’S FUTURE

Child

Children are precious, but their young lives are under threat in Myanmar. Out of the country’s 50 million people, about 19 million are under the age of 18. Every year 1.3 million children are born, but 61,100 die before their first birthday and 93,600 die before the age of five. About one out of four children under the age of five is malnourished.

Without the income from their children’s jobs in shops, in construction work and selling on street corners, many poor families would not eat. Ways need to be found to support parents living in poverty so that their children can attend school and improve their prospects in life.
