Myanmar‘s military government is composed of officers who predominantly come from the Bhama (Bamar) ethnic group. Currently known as the State Peace and Development Council, the present government took power in 1988. Three years later, elections were held. The government lost by a landslide but refused to hand over power.
Though the last decade has seen some noticeable improvements, there is still much work to be done to achieve equality and prosperity. A growing gap exists between the upper and lower classes, and the economy lags behind its potential. Ethnic and religious minorities (including Christians) are still under represented and pressurized. However, the national convention to write a new constitution has been resumed, and a “roadmap to democracy” has been announced.
